7 Quick and Easy Math Center Ideas

Free, fun and useful Kindergarten – 1st Grade, Common Core aligned lesson plans, math games, calendars, behavior charts, materials and more! Today was our last day before Spring Break! No kiddos, just a Share Fair that our district has every year for Professional Development. Hi, friends! So, our school-wide math night was a huge success. While parents were in 30 minute math classes, our students had a blast with math games and activities throughout the school. We saw about 40 of our 1st grade families, which was great! Our half-hour session focused on two main things -explaining the Recipe for Teaching – Ingredients for making learning fun and engaging! Does that say Volume 52?!?!?!?!

All of our students process the concept of multiplication differently, and therefore will build their fluency and understanding at different rates. For some students, you can never have enough worksheets because they are finished before you even have a moment to put out the next. For other students, one worksheet is overwhelming and their confidence plummets when they see their peers running up to the finished work bin with three sheets in hand.

I needed my students to participate in more meaningful learning in a comparison-free environment, all while being differentiated enough to meet my wide range of learners. Well, I got right to work. I then thought back to my six years of teaching math centers in first grade. Were there any that I could possibly modify to use with multiplication? Even if I could, would my students turn their nose up at them because they were too babyish?

It turns out that there are LOADS of activities that were perfectly suited to my multiplication needs. I put a bunch of them together and began introducing them to my students.

Every year about this time, I start to notice my students getting bored with the same usual math centers. That means I need to go online and start hunting down new math center ideas to find something that will hold their interest, but also teach them a thing or two about math. They are activities you can implement without any purchase of my products — for any concept! Card Games. Most classrooms have at least one set of cards, but if not, you can find them at the dollar store.

There are a variety of games you can have your students play and still practice their math concepts. For instance, remove the face cards and the aces and then have students play any variation of top-it. Divide the set of cards up evenly among the pair of students; 2 students each flip a card at once and perform whichever operation you prefer add, subtract, multiply.

The first student to say the correct answer first gets both cards. Students keep going until there are no cards left. The student with the most cards wins! Then program them to be any set of numbers you wish. Then students can perform any operation, play a game of go fish, play rummy place them in order , or any other fun game!
